Nickerson Beach Workshop

My recent Nickerson Beach Workshop was great. Arthur Morris and I had fun as usual photographing together with friends and clients. On Friday morning Lloyd Spitalnik met us out there. It was good to shoot with Lloyd and spend some time with him. Lloyd and I are doing a 1/2 day workshop together at Jamaica Bay in Queens on August 13th. Anyone interested it signing up can visit my workshop page.

Clemens Vanderwerf, Pat Eagen, Richard Carlan, Hali Sowle, Bob Kaplan, Neil Nourse, Charles Scheffold, Denise Ippolito and Arthur Morris (not in the picture but at the workshop: Jon Saperia). We had a great group of clients and friends meet us out at Nickerson Beach. It was nice to see Joe Senzatimore. I also met Bob Ettinger from BPN as well as many other friendly folks that stopped to say hello.

Oystercatcher ~ Nickerson Beach
Hali Sowle (pictured above) and I took advantage of the beautiful background colors as this Oystercatcher stood on this sand dune. We wanted to include the dune fence and we were both very happy with our images.

Oystercatcher and chick ~ Nickerson Beach
Oystercatchers seem to be very patient when it comes to feeding their young. They will pick up the meal over and over again until the chick gets it in it’s mouth.

This Oystercatcher was standing in front of dune grass, the red in the background is from one of the string flags that ropes off the colony. The background is naturally blurred but I added a bit of blur to the bottom debris to soften it a bit.

Jon Saperia and I waited very patiently to capture these young Piping Plover chicks. I used an f/9 to try to get both in focus.

Piping Plover Chick

Artie, Jon and I were able to photograph 3 Piping Plover chicks, down one from yesterday. This chick was captured with the Canon 500mm lens and the Canon 2x tele-convertor which I have owned for several years and never used but Artie urged me to try it and he was right. This is full frame with a small slice off the bottom for composition. I did want to include the entire shadow.

  1. You did great with the tiny plover chicks. Were they all with the 2X? I love the one with the two; was that AF?

And I love the oystercatcher chick with the sand crab with the orange eggs. The boys and girls are trashing my plover chick image in Avian. You gotta love it.

You worked hard to make the trip a success and did just great.

  2. Mary says:

Love the one of the chick and mom and the one with the red and green background. Also the 2 chicks with their shadows underneath them is very cool. I’m gonna have to get back into the birdie stuff.

  3. Richard Carlan says:

As usual, great images Denise. I love the silhouette shots against the sunrise.

  4. denise says:

Artie, The 2 Piping Plover chicks were captured with the 1.4 yesterday. I did use AF. Your chick image rocks. Thanks again for all your help and great teaching.

  5. denise says:

Mary, Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. Let me know when you are ready to get out there!!

  6. Deb Kral says:

Lovely collection (as usual!), Denise! The chicks are amazing little critters, nice backgrounds too. Hope to join up with you one of these days but for the next few months I am in “horse” mode.

  7. denise says:

Edith, Thank you so much. I love doing blurs and I created so many this past week. I hope to post more.

Deb, I would love to have you join Lloyd and I at Jamaica Bay in August if your schedule allows. I appreciate the kind comments.

  8. Debra Keller says:

I couldn’t help saying AWWWWW as soon as I scrolled to the chick! All beautiful as usual Denise!

  9. denise says:

Michael, Thank you for commenting. I like that one too!

Debra, I always appreciate hearing from you. I have to go check out what you have been up to…

  10. You did a great job Denise. I hate you for getting the plover chicks :-) . You know that’s the one i wanted. Really love those silhouettes but all the images are top notch. It was good seeing Artie as well. Glad he’s getting better.
