I created these Hosta bud images from the Hostas that I have planted in front of my foundation. You guessed it the backdrop is my foundation. I liked the way the buds were opening with a hint of color but the foundation background needed a boost so I decided to give it some added texture. For the first image I used a texture overlay that I downloaded free from Shadowhouse Creations. One of my favorite things to do with these textures is to change the hue to conform more to the color palette of my flowers. I then added texture through the color channel with the Lighting Effects Filter in Photoshop. To learn more about my technique check out my “Guide to Creative Filters and Effects”. Using layer masks I am able to control where I want the texture. I left this image with some cooler tones.
For the image above I chose to use warmer tones. I liked the juxtaposition of the buds so I cropped the image to more of a square. I added another texture overlay from Shadowhouse but this time I reduced the layer as to only show a bit of the texture around the outer edges of the image. I liked the parchment feel to this and wanted to keep that look. I used a heavy dose of the Unsharp Mask Filter in Photoshop to bring some more texture. By using a layer mask I was able to apply the Unsharp Mask to just the background and not the flower.

Definitely number 1 for me.
I prefer the second one………..
I like them both. Why choose?
Without a doubt, #1.
Number Two
Denise, I like both equally. Great color and texture to both images.
They’re both great but I’m going to say #2
Hi folks, It sounds like about half and half. I like both but for different reasons. I liked the tall straight cool feel of the first image and the warm softer feel to the second.
If I change the temperature when working on an image, it’s far more often to make it somewhat warmer. Nevertheless, I’m going with the first one.
It might have something to do with more than temperature. I don’t know which would have had more appeal if you’d done different versions of Number 1.
I prefer nr 2, both beautiful
Dennis and Ben, Thank you both. I appreciate the feedback!
