Whenever I am at the beach photographing birds I can’t help but enjoy the peaceful feeling I get when the waves roll into the shoreline. If there are no opportunities for birds I turn my attention to creating pleasing blurs of the waves. It is actually a lot of fun to anticipate the wave curl and try to capture it with just the right amount of blur. To learn more about creating the soft gentle feel that an intentional blur applies to an image check out the eBook that I co-wrote with Arthur Morris titled “A Guide to Pleasing Blurs“.

  1. I love wave blurs. The last one is my fave in this series. What shutter speeds did you use for the 3 images?

Artie, thanks. I do too. I used approx. 1/8 sec for all three.

  3. Denise, beautiful wave blurs with the perfect amount of motion captured. I love the last one best. When I head up to Lake Superior next week I am hoping for some rough conditions on the lake for some new wave blurs. It’s the closest thing to an ocean around these parts :)

Andrew, Thank you kindly. I hope to see some of your images from Lake Superior when it gets rough!

Denise, I’m gong to go against the grain here…I LOVE the first image. I’ve gone back to it several times now..it would make a wonderful canvas print. You can almost hear the surf breaking in the background…great pastel hues…very, very serene. Needed this one this morning!

John, I love that one too! I thought a peaceful morning would be good :)

  6. I loved them all. What would happen if you cropped the third just a bit?

Hi Raleigh, I think there is a little wiggle room there. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Love these blurs, not sure whether the first or the third…you can look at the waves for hours and lose yourself.

Nancy, thank you. I do love the ocean and my time there in the mornings when no one else is around. It is such a peaceful time.

    Hi Denise,
Ken forwarded this to me. They are very beautiful, soft and have lovely colors. I’m taken with the first one because I’m a fan of rolling waves. The third one is unique and striking in that it has an abstract quality to it, like flowing fabric.
We head to Florida next month, I hope Ken will try this. I love your work.

Hi Dorothy, Thank you for the kind words, it’s so nice to hear from you. Tell Ken I said hello and I’m glad he forwarded this to you. Have a great time in Florida- and yes to giving this a try!! I will be down there in February. I am doing a seminar at Selby Gardens which should be great!
