Eastern State Penitentiary Zoom Blur

For the above image I used a Photoshop zoom blur effect. With a layer mask I revealed a bit of the details. I also used the “soft light” blend mode in Photoshop. For me the image has kind of an ethereal quality to it. I decided to do a B&W conversion on the same image as above using the new Topaz B&W Effects program. Topaz sent me a free beta copy and asked me to create some images and let them know what I thought about their product. I like it. The price is right at $29.00 (buy now price) and the plug-in offers many different effects including some creative ones. I have had a lot of fun with the new B&W Effects plug-in by Topaz and hope that you do too. This version feels cold and lonely to me.

Here is a version with the blur applied only to the floor and ceiling.

They’re both great images Denise. While I love B&W I’m am leaning to the color one this time around. Love the blur.

Thanks so much Edith, I couldn’t decide myself.

  2. Beautifully seen, captured, and processed. Folks should note the careful framing, i.e., the lamp (?) on the wall on our right. Love both versions.

Sounds like a compliment from the great Arthur Morris-whoohoo!!

I love both, Denise. The use of the zoom really draws your eye into the shot (Like the door shot you posted yesterday, too). Just bought the Topaz B&W program and I’m anxious to try it later today.

Andrea, I gotta tell you I am having a blast with these zoom blurs. I did a hallway which I will post soon. I think you’ll like B&W Effects, I know I did.

  4. Looks like solitary confinement. Both versions are great and the zoom blur is a very nice touch.

Andrew, I was thinking that it did look like solitary confinement-funny you did too!

Cool blur effect. I’ve tried this a few times but it never seemed right. This looks great though.

Thanks Marc, I think it has to fit the image and in this case the haunting cell seems to work. BTW-I love your work!

Nice use of the zoom blur Denise. Great subject, even greater execution! And congrats to Phillip, looks as though you inspired him!

Deb, thank you kindly. Philip did a great job!

Denise, all three images are outstanding, but the first one remains my favorite. It’s starkly haunting…and Artie hits the nail on the head, the image is a lesson in framing (and seeing, and technique, and processing for that matter). I’ve come back to this image several times today…it just draws you in. I’m not sure why..but it evokes memories of the original version of “The Shining” for me. Well done.

John, Thank you very much, I do feel that it is haunting. I remember “The Shining”-I never could get through that one!

Thanks for this wonderful post, Denise. I am now inspired to dive deeper into the world of filters and effects, which I’ve been planning for some time. I’m going to grab a copy of your ebook to help me hone that skill.

The images here are wonderfully done, but my favorite is the first with the zoom blur effect. Nice work as always.

Jimi, thank you kindly. I appreciate your support!
