It occurred to me while I was optimizing these sandpiper images that all three are very different and I like them all but for different reasons. Which sandpiper pose and image do you like the best? Please let me know why too, thanks. I’ll share my personal thoughts on the images later…

Don’t forget to enter ~ THE BIRDS AS ART 1st International Bird Photography Competition
I like c the best, My personal preference is having the peeps doing something. I do like the other two pictures also
Thanks Myer, I was hoping to see you out there this year

I’d go with C; it almost looks as if the bird is “floating”; very clean FG and BG…no distracting elements.
The major difference I see between A and B is the rock (is it a rock?) in the water and the bird’s feet are slightly buried in sand in B.
What body & lens did you use? How far away were you? Nice work!
Loren
Loren, Hi and welcome to my blog! Thank you for taking the time to share your comments. The “rock” is seaweed. I was using the Canon 1D Mark III with the Canon 500mm lens +1.4 ex., I was pretty close. They are all pretty much full frame.

I like C best….closer view with a little more detail although all of them are great pics.
Thank you for visiting my blog Janice, I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts.

I’m going with B, Denise, although C is a close second.
B vs A — I like the turn of the body in B, the raised foot, and being able to see what could be the object of the sandpiper’s attention. Whether the seaweed (???) is what it’s focused on, or not, it also gives some balance to the image, I think.
B vs C — A tougher call. The colors favor C. I love blue and brown together. However, B gets the edge because of the sandpiper’s connection with the seaweed. There’s no story to go along with C. Some people might argue that that’s a good thing because I linger, there, trying to figure it out. But I don’t do that.
Dennis, we are so on the same page!! yes seaweed.

2 and 3 are my favorites. I like the way 2 seems to be looking at the pile of seaweed (or whatever it is) on the right, and I like the feeling of movement imparted by the raised foot in 3. Both those images are more dynamic than 1.
I like that you can feel the energy somehow moving in 2 & 3, even though there is no motion blur whatsoever in either of them.
Mary, you and I share a lot of the same views. Thanks for commenting.

I will respectfully disagree. In photo B you lose the tail of the bird so in my opinion the photo is not complete. In image C it’s a very common, “seen that angle a million times shot”. I like photograph A, a bit of a different perspective and the complete side of the bird is visible.
Richard, If I had to pick one for a contest it would be “A” for all of the reasons you stated

I like C the best with B being a close second. I like the full body of C and the reflection. B has a slightly turned body although there is some interest with the seaweed.
Len, Thank you kindly, I appreciate you taking the time to stop by.

All are sharp and present slightly different views. I will propose a fourth; move the kelp from “B” to “C” and you might have a delightful image….or not
If I must select from the three, I too will vote “C.”
Raleigh, that’s a good idea I might use in one of my photo art images. Thanks

I like C more because of the pose, closeness, sharpness and proximity.
Rafy, Welcome to my blog, thank you for commenting. I like the sharpness and detail in “C” also.

Thank you all for taking the time to comment. I think that you all made some really good points. It seems that “C” is the clear winner with some votes for “B”.
The HA (head angles) on all three are not going to pass the HA police anytime soon. “A” is a cute pose with the ruffled feathers… but “C” is a striking shot that shows the feather detail well. I am going to have to go with “B” as my front runner. The HA as Art Morris will tell you is off on all three of them but most especially “B”. Why “B” for me. It has character and like character. Hey it really is a matter of taste.
For more about HA check out this thread on BPN that was started by the man who wrote the book on HA’s.

Great series Denise! They all are great but the last one is my favorite.
Phillip, Thank you kindly

Denise, a little slow with my comments, but for me I love all three and was going to pick A and C, but then I noticed that in B the one foot is slightly raised which for me makes it the winner. The sandpiper is looking at the seaweed and the slightly raised foot implies motion as this bird appears to be preparing to take a step towards the seaweed in hopes of a little morsel. Very nice captures!
Andrew, Thank you so much for your comments
