Glencairn Museum ~ Bryn Athyns, PA
The above image is a 2 image stitched composite (I couldn’t decide how much I wanted to include on the right) of the outside of Glencairn Museum at Bryn Athyns. It stands right next door to the Cairnwood Estate where I will be conducting a 3 hour workshop on Saturday December 10th. Clients signing up for the Cairnwoood Estate workshop will have the opportunity to photograph the outside of this beautiful building as well. On my recent visit to the estate I saw many different angles to shoot the exterior of the museum. A wide angle lens is highly recommended. I used my Canon 5D and my 24-105mm lens. I merged the composite in Photoshop, then I tonemapped it in Photomatix (use code “BIRDSASART” to save 15%) and added some tweaks with Nik Color Efex (use code BAA for discount). I removed a rock from the right foreground and a parts of a car on the left. I also used the Lens Correction filter in Photoshop making my adjustments manually. I decided to keep the arched openings dark.
Designed by the renowned architectural firm of Carrére and Hastings Cairnwood evokes the grandeur of the Gilded Age with its intimacy, beauty and elegance. Cairnwood is located in historic Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania near the border of Bucks and Montgomery Counties. The grounds are 16 miles from center city Philadelphia and are easily accessible from Interstate 95, the Philadelphia Airport, and the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Cairnwood is part of a private college campus and shares its grounds with the Glencairn Museum and the Bryn Athyn Cathedral. Next to the house and grounds are the pristine woodlands of the Pennypack Nature Preserve, which represents the largest private reserve in Montgomery County, and serves as the anchor to this graceful campus of architectural wonders. The grounds of Cairnwood were designed by Charles Eliot of the firm of Olmsted, Olmsted and Eliot, responsible for the design of Central Park in New York City and the Biltmore Estate in North Carolina.
