Graffiti Underground ~ Philly

This past weekend I had back to back HDR photography workshops at Eastern State Penitentiary and in the early morning before the Sunday workshop I went with a large group of friends to scout out the Graffiti Underground (thanks Lisa!) so I could add it to my spring ESP Workshop. We all loved it and had a blast. Here is my money shot, wink-wink. I added Topaz Simplify and converted it to B&W. I revealed the can color via a layer mask. The group consisted of: Scott and Carol Vincent, Lisa Sparrow, Mary Stamper, Don Schroder, Noreen Buckley, Karl Baker and me.

Scott created this silhouette image of me while we were at the Graffiti Underground. I love having Scott around, he always has great ideas to try. :)

Hey, I remember that first image! ;~) Like how you focused the attention on the paint can yet still emphasized the $ sign. Also enjoyed the silhouette of you that Scott took. What a great day of shooting at the Graffiti Underground. Highly recommend!

Hi Don, Thanks for the comments. It was a fun day, we’ll have to do it again!

Even though I’d lived near Philadelphia (a long time ago), I’d never heard of ESP until about a year ago. And the Graffiti Underground not until just now. Wow, it looks like a pair of incredible photographic opportunities.

You’ve posted a number of interesting shots, here, but my favorite by far is the one with the steps. The colors and the composition are both great. Nice work!

Thanks Dennis, I really love that one. It has so much appeal to me. I took several different views of the stairs. I’ll have to post some others soon.

  3. Denise, these are really cool. I love the color of the graffiti against the run down cement walls. The first image is my favorite – awesome!

Thanks Andrew, I appreciate it :)

  4. I liked all of them, especially the third. If you cropped it so the side walls didn’t show, the entire thing could be a painting.

Thank you Raleigh, I appreciate you sharing your thoughts, I’ll give it a try.

  5. Hey Denise, The Graffiti Underground will be a great addition to the ESP workshop. It’s amazing that we can photograph the same area and came up with different interpretations. I love what you did with the “Money Shot” – very creative. As always, great fun photographing with you!! Your clients will love this spot!!

Thanks Scott, You’re right-it is always neat to see what everyone comes away with.
