To create the image above I started with an image of a rose, then I added a couple of free texture overlays from Shadowhouse Creations. I then used the type tool to create the text on it’s own layer. I lowered the opacity of the text layer until the text appeared lighter and more transparent. For the version below I desaturated the image to create a softer look.

The meaning most often attributed to this saying is that when it is all said and done it is what it is. The actual line from the poem by Gertrude Stein titled Sacred Emily is

Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose
Loveliness extreme.
Extra gaiters,
Loveliness extreme.
Sweetest ice-cream.

Although I like the first one a lot, I can see why you went for a softer look. The rose looks wonderful in the second one, and it goes very well with the background in terms of just color. However, I have to wonder if I’d like it even better — in terms of the theme of the image — if it weren’t so brown.

The typeface was a great choice. It complements the image very well.

Thanks Dennis, I do like the pale brown tones but you could really go with a completely B&W look if you wanted. I guess it’s just a matter of preference :) .

Denise, I adore the golden tones in the first image but I also like the second paler version. I have been combing the internet for texture overlays with “sayings” that I like, you have given me the right direction once again. Thank you for sharing this technique.

Carole, Thank you kindly as always I appreciate your support. You can always cut and paste quotes or poems, etc. directly into the text area once you’ve selected the type tool.

Love them both, Denise. They both evoke different feelings.

Thanks so much Cynthia, I appreciate the kind words.

Beautiful, beautiful! I think my favorite is the 2nd one, though. It just seems more peaceful with the desaturation. I’m curious… Did you photograph your rose against a neutral background?

Hi Andrea, this was created with a fairly neutral background. I used an old piece of wood and laid the rose across it. I had originally thought that the wood surface would look good but I preferred it with the texture.

A beautifully creative image. Clever idea and well executed. A prefer the first one – it has the warmth that I personally would associate with the saying.

    Thank you kindly.
