I have been in the market for an ultra light super compact tripod that would fit easily into my suitcase or backpack. At the Mid Atlantic Photo Expo Gitzo had a display model of their Traveler Tripod. I picked it up immediately and knew that this was the one I wanted. It was very compact, lightweight- made of carbon fiber and it will be a great addition to my travel gear. I always hesitate to bring a second tripod when I travel because I never seem to have enough room. However I always need to have an extra tripod so that I don’t have to remove my Wimberley Head Version II (that usually has my 500mm lens attached to it) and attach my ballhead each time I spot a landscape or macro scene, which seems to be all the time:). I can’t wait for it to be shipped! Below are the specs form the company.
The Traveler Tripod is the most compact professional tripod on the market. It is the right solution for photographers looking for lightweight and compactness in pure state in a professional tripod, when traveling (and flying) is a common practice. In order to achieve this “magic,” Gitzo developed a unique patented 180º folding mechanism that gets rid of any space inefficiency in the support system. The head is now accommodated inside the folded tripod legs and this makes it the smallest folded tripod for its open size and number of sections. Matching this compactness with the sturdiness of lightweight carbon fiber and good speed in setup makes the Traveler the ultimate tripod. All Traveler tripods feature the Ground Level Set that allows for low shooting positions and further weight savings. This position is achieved by fixing the head and/or disc (included) directly to the tripod top casting, thus eliminating the center column. The included aluminum upper disc features a Safe Lock, which cuts vibrations and improves the grip between tripod and head. Traveler tripods come with a convenient anti dust bag for storage and packing. The textile anti dust bag is also an answer to environmental protection, aiming to reduce the amount of plastic bags that the world indplastic bags that global industry is introducing into the environment each day.
GT1542T tripod combines the compactness and light weight of the Gitzo Traveler System with the stability and size of a regular Mountaineer Series 1 tripod. It is dedicated to the high-end user seeking for a highly portable support with no compromise.

Isn’t is great when you find that piece of equipment that is just what you’ve been looking for?
It really is Richard, I saw one last year at the PDN Expo and decide to wait- not sure why, but have regretted every time I get ready for a trip.

This looks like a wonderful tripod Denise. Thanks for the info.
Thanks Phillip, I really think it’s going to be a great addition to my gear.

Denise, thanks for the tripod info…with my bad back I may need something like this sooner than later.

I love this tripod. I have had it about 3 months now and bring it everywhere. I live in Napels, Italy, and they still seem to have an issue bringing any tripod on a plane (They even made me check my gorillapod once) so I still have to check it. Still, an awesome tripod. Highly recommended.
Thanks, I spent a lot of time looking for the right one and am glad to hear so many others have this one and like it
