This was one of my favorite abstract blurs from Bosque del Apache New Mexico last year. I saw so many sights and groupings of birds to photograph. These backlit geese caught my eye. I liked the way the light hit the cornstalks and made them look golden. I created several straightforward shots and they were nice but none conveyed the look I wanted. I decided to create a vertical pan blur; since my camera and 500mm lens were mounted on a tripod I first needed to loosen my Wimberley Head Version II and tripod collar so that my lens and camera would move fluidly in every direction. Moving in a vertical panning motion I slightly twisted my camera to create a soft flame look. I was happy with the abstract look of this one and the way you could still make out the subject if you looked closely. Anyone who has ever created a blur knows that what you want and what you get may be two different things. Good technique and persistence is the key to successful blur images.
