As requested here are my favorite Harlequin Duck shots from the last few years. Harlequins have smooth, densely packed feathers that trap a lot of air within them which makes them exceptionally buoyant. The patch of white on the males face is very dense and does not show much detail even when exposed properly. Harlequins feed in tightly packed flocks- diving and swimming under water. Their diet consists of mussels, shellfish, aquatic insects, crustaceans and some small fish. They can also be found on the rocks grazing and resting. The males are colorful and they really are the star out on the jetty!
Anyone wishing to learn more about photographing at the jetty or to see some more images from both myself and Art Morris you can check out my Barnegat Jetty Site Guide here.

  1. I hope to get to the jetty for a day or two in mid-DEC when I visit my Mom. Love the quacking hen.

Art, Thanks, I’m hoping for a good season out there :)

  5. Denise, all are beautiful. I have seen one or two males on Lake Ontario in Toronto, but they are always out quite a distance. Nice that you get them in so close. You are inspiring me to head down to Lake Ontario to see what is hanging around this year. Very busy for the next couple of weeks though, but hopefully soon.

Hi Andrew, Thank you for the kind words. I look forward to seeing your “finds”.
