Barnegat Lighthouse, NJ ~ 500mm lens full frame, my first ever Barnegat Lighthouse shot
Flock of Gulls at Barnegat Light, NJ ~ Processed with Fractalius and Topaz Simplify
I was on my way out to the jetty with a group of clients when I saw this flock of gulls blasting off in the distance. The sky was moody and they kept blasting off from a small strip of land. I wished I had my 24-105mm lens attached but I had the 800mm lens (Artie’s lens) so I decided to capture a closer group shot.

Don’t forget to enter ~ THE BIRDS AS ART 1st International Bird Photography Competition
Wow, you made soup from a stone with that gull image! And you did a nice job of isolating that Purple Sandpiper.
Thanks Artie, I enjoyed watching the gulls and you know how much I love Purple Sandpipers.

I’m surprised that you hadn’t photographed the Barnegat lighthouse before. If you were waiting for a good sky, you sure got one. That color transition makes a nice background for a great composition.
Thank you Dennis, I appreciate it. Ya, hard to believe I never took a shot of the Lighthouse but I never really had an interest in it-not sure why.

The first image is wonderful – is that with the 500mm too? Beautifully sharp and a lovely diffused background.
Thanks Andy, Yes this was with my 500mm lens and my 1.4 teleconvertor. Slight crop for composition.

Great images Denise. I haven’t been to Barnegat in ages (I vacationed there for the first 16 years of my life) and the lighthouse brings back memories. Thanks.
Thank you Len, I appreciate it!

Beautiful images Denise. The lighthouse shot is terrific. Love the color of the sky.
Thanks Edith, The colors in the sky made me want to take the shot of the Lighthouse

Denise, all beautiful, love the purple sandpiper on the sloping rock, the lovely sky in the lighthouse image, and the fracted blast-off is very cool!
Thanks Andrew, I love the flock!

Hi Denise – how about a little fun competition this winter? Let’s see who can come up with the most artistic image from Barnegat Jetty. We can set the timeframe from December 21st – April 1st, and your blog group can judge the winner (perhaps Art would also like to judge). With the winter doldrums upon us and with all of the challenges of this location, I think this would be something fun to do that could motivate people to get out in nature and at the same time improve their technique. What do you say?
Rob, It’s a great idea but I may not have time to organize it. Art Morris just put together a great competition (BAA fist International Bird Photography Contestfor bird photographers and I would encourage you to enter it. The contest ends April 1st I believe and you can submit in several different categories. Andy Rouse, Darrell Gulin and Art Morris are a few of the judges and it would be a great way to have your work looked at by those great photographers. The prize pool is LIKE $20,000 WORTH OF STUFF!
