Black Skimmer chick ~ Nickerson Bch, NY
While co-leading with Arthur Morris this week at Nickerson Beach NY, repeat client Kitty Kono noticed a skimmer chick right next to her foot. Kitty alerted the group (Stanley, Deirdre, Micheal,Tim, Gaurav, Eric, Pierre, Sue, Malcom and Sallie Jo who joined us for a day) so no one would step on the tiny chick. It was a good thing she saw the chick as Nickerson Beach was loaded with beach goers and it would have been very easy for someone to have stepped right on it. We were all very careful not to touch or disturb the chick who had inadvertently walked outside of the roped off area away from it’s parents and the rest of the colony. We all watched as the little one made it’s way back into the colony without incident.

Skimmer & Tern Blur w/ Fractalius
A Peregrine Falcon entered the colony on several occasions lifting the birds off into a wild frenzy. As I was photographing the swarm of birds I saw the falcon. I didn’t know I had captured an image of the juvenile falcon but during post processing I saw it it one of my images. I moved the falcon off of the top edge of the frame and back in the image in Photoshop.
American Oystercatcher resting
Michael Goodman, Deirdre Sheerr-Gross and I photographed this American Oystercatcher resting. Getting down low allowed us to get the ocean in the ocean in the background and created a nice dreamy effect. Placing a small subject close to a corner is something I always like to do while composing an image like this.
BF on the Beach
After walking down the beach away from the group repeat IPT client Deirdre Sheerr-Gross and I saw a Monarch Butterfly on the beach, we both had a good time photographing it. I added Topaz Simplify and Fractalius along with a texture overlay.

Despite the Thursday afternoon thunder and lightning we had a great time. The group was sweet and eager to learn. Denise offered a killer introductory program and a great Photoshop session. Did I mention all the great tern, skimmer, gull, and shorebird photography and the great meals? Everyone headed home exhausted.
Denise…
What a treat to be able to relive those memorable moments of the past few days/daze through your photos… I learned SO much from you, Denise.. Thank you for generosity, support and friendship…
Who knew there would be so many little chicks this late in the summer… I think… “Kitty’s a real Chick magnet”…
I’m including my thank you to you and Artie…. So other folks may get a flavor of what we shared.. Hope that’s ok:
Many Thanks Artie and Denise…
That was the GREATEST!!!!
I so loved our time together…. I learned a “ton” …so many new things about photography (equipment, technique, composition, anticipation and positioning.. remembering to “tell the story”… the importance of the BG,I could go on..) and I learned a “stack” about birds and their behaviors… and the post production tips and techniques where terrific: Photoshop, Nik & Beyond… and I even learned some about life… and that Artie really is a sweetie….
Many Thanks…. Many, Many thanks… Looking forward to the next ones…
w/affection and a passion for the birds, Deirdre
