Day 2 – Friday June 7, 2013
Today we have a full day tour of the timeless Camargue, including a three hour horseback riding tour. With an area of over 930 km2 (360 sq mi), the Camargue is Western Europe’s largest river delta. It is a vast plain comprising large brine lagoons or étangs, cut off from the sea by sandbars and encircled by reed-covered marshes.
The Camargue is home to more than 400 species of birds; its brine ponds provide one of the few European habitats for the greater flamingo. The marshes are also famous for the Camargue Bull and the Camargue Horse.
For centuries, possibly thousands of years, these small horses have lived wild in the harsh environment of the delta. They developed the stamina, hardiness and agility for which they are known today. The Camargue horse is the traditional mount of the gardians, the Camargue “cowboys” who herd the black Camargue bulls used in bullfighting in southern France. Camargue horses galloping through water is a popular and romantic image of the region, something we certainly hope to photograph on this trip.

Day 3 Saturday, June 8, 2013
Another full day tour in the Camargue. We shoot greater flamingos feeding, displaying and in flight at the Parc Ornithologique de Pont de Gau. Located in the middle of the Parc naturel régional de Camargue, the bird park’s natural habitats primarily include marsh and ponds with remarkable proximity to migratory and resident birds, such as flamingos, herons, storks, ducks, raptors and other small waders.
Note the actual order of the itinerary may vary according to weather or other conditions.

Day 4 Sunday, June 9, 2013
This morning we visit one of several ranches for our last photography session with the striking Camargue horses.
After lunch we will transfer to our hotel near Gordes. You will stay three nights in the Parc Naturel du Luberon, a designated area of outstanding natural beauty. The Luberon valley is a picturesque landscape of vineyards, orchards and small lavender fields nestled on the valley hillsides.

Day 5 Monday, June 10, 2013
A scenic drive today into the Vaucluse hills and the lavender growing area of the Plateau de Sault. The town of Sault is a centre of lavender production. From the town the panorama across the valley below towards the slopes of Mont Ventoux is a stunning vista. We will visit the Jardin Conservatoire de la Lavande.
This afternoon we’ll drive back to Gordes along the winding route through the Gorges de la Nesque, a grandiose wild canyon and one of the most spectacular gorges of Provence. Time and opening hours permitting we’ll visit the beautiful Cistercian Abbaye de Senanque flanked by lavender fields in a peaceful valley near Gordes.

Day 6 – Tuesday June 11, 2013
An early start to visit the market in the picturesque village of Gordes, perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the whole of the Luberon valley. Enjoy all the sights and colours of Provence in the market.
Lunch will be on your own in one of the cafes in the town square in the pretty ochre-red village of Roussillon. In the afternoon you may explore this delightful village with its local artisan shops, winding alleys and beautiful vistas. There is time to visit the Conservatoire des Ochres for an introduction to the use of ochre as a decorative material. For the more intrepid walker, there is the option to discover the hidden ochre valleys on a 2 hour walk through pine covered slopes and vineyards near the village.
