Snow Monkeys Trip Report

We are finished photographing the Snow Monkeys and will be heading to Hokkaido in the morning. I wanted to share a couple of shots from our time with the monkeys.

The image below is a rim-lit monkey on a branch. I liked the small hints of snow falling, so I actually enhanced them and added a few more plus some specular highlights in post. The image below is the original and the one below is with the enhanced background.

The Coronavirus has even affected the day to day lives of the Snow Monkeys-they are now required to carry their own personal sanitizer with them everywhere they go. JUST KIDDING! I thought the image below would make you smile, especially with the above caption. Anyway, one of the little guys got a hold of a bottle of hand sanitizer (not sure from where) and all the monkeys chased him around. He actually punctured the bottle a little and was not at all happy with the taste. That did not stop him from taunting the others with his new shiny toy. Once he dropped the bottle I reached out and grabbed it and threw it out. But it did make for a fun photo shoot!

The two shots below are of this adorable baby monkey that was hiding in its mothers fur. It would peek its head out from time to time. When mamma wanted to groom it, she would grab it like an old rag doll and toss it around until it was in place for proper grooming. They are such interesting creatures and a hoot to photograph.

I’ll share some more of our trip as it unfolds. They are calling for snow in Hokkaido-fingers crossed.

All of the images in this post were created with the Sony 70-200mm f/4 lens. I borrowed it from B&H to try it out. It is sharp, lightweight and I was pleasantly surprised to find that it has an interior zoom just like the Sony 200-600mm-it glides! A special thank you to my friends at B&H for always letting me try out lenses and camera bodies. I think this one will be added to my gear bag!

Girls Who Click- Proud Moment!

I received an email from Annabel Weiman’s mom saying that her daughter had won a contest with the Kestrel image that she captured while on the Girls Who Click workshop that I co-lead with Ashley Scully. I was so thrilled! I received the New Jersey Monthly magazine today along with a hand written note from Annabel.

Girls Who Click is an organization that was set up by Suzi Eszterhas to empower teen girls to enter the field of nature photography and use their work to further conservation efforts.

From Annabel:

I’m 15 and go to school in Oakland, NJ.  Since the 8th grade I loved photography because I’m able to find unique things and capture them.  I like that I can I express myself that way.  After entering some photos taken with my phone to our annual high school magazine, three were selected.  That was the first time my work was published.  My mom encouraged me to take a digital photography class and get a “real” camera.  We both took a workshop at Unique Photo in NJ to learn how to use my camera and its special functions.  The GWC workshop at The Raptor Trust was my next photography event for me.  I had two really good instructors, Denise Ippolito and Ashleigh Scully.  In that workshop I ended up with so many good photos of birds that I had a hard time finding my favorites.  I entered one that was an American Kestrel, a beautiful little falcon, in a New Jersey Monthly magazine cover contest.  I thought with the cropping it would be perfect for a magazine cover.  I received a runner-up award in the student category which shocked me! I felt really proud that it was selected and published in a state magazine.

Italian Dolomites in Autumn, October 8 – 15, 2021

Ok, this is my last workshop announcement for awhile <wink> , thank you all for your patience as I posted my 2021 tour schedule. Lots of exciting new locations along with some of my old faves. I also slipped in a few new workshops for 2022 that are listed on my workshop page-be sure to check them out, they are all listed in date order. If there is a workshop that has sold out and you wanted to attend, I highly suggest getting on that wait list as you just never know…

Come join me for an 8 day photo tour of the Italian Dolomites. Autumn is a great time to visit this captivating location as the scenes explode with rich color. During this tour we will visit the Drei Zinnen, Lago di Braies, Alpi di Siusi, Langkofel, Lago Imides, the St. Johann Church, Passo Rolle, Cinque Torri and many more – including some hidden gems! We will stay in wonderful hotels where we can relax between our photography sessions. The physical difficulty level is listed as easy. There are a couple of mild hikes but most locations are near the road.

Day 1:

My guides and I will pick you up at the Munich Airport (MUC) no later than 12:00noon. Our four hour drive to the Dolomites will have us driving through three countries. We will arrive at our first hotel, in the charming village of Cortina. This will be our home for the first 2 nights.

From here we will hike for about 30 minutes to our first sunset location. This location offers an incredible view over the Drei Zinnen. We then do a quick dinner at a local pizzeria before heading up the mountain to shoot the night sky if the skies are clear.

Day 2:

We get up early and drive to the amazing Lago di Braies. This calm and easy to reach lake is a must for everyone visiting the Dolomites. After an early morning photo shoot we’ll head back to our hotel for breakfast. During the day we will go for a driving tour. For sunset we will either shoot at Lago Limedes or Cinque Torri. The conditions will decide.

Day 3-4:

Passo Giau is our sunrise spot. An amazing mountain pass with incredible views. Now it’s time to move to the area around Passo Rolle.  In this area we have views of one of the most impressive walls in Europe. This is also one of the few places where we can combine a river with the mountains. We will stay in this valley for sunset and hopefully the night sky.

Day 5-6:

Sunrise will take place at a small lake with amazing reflections. After which we will move towards Ortisei, our basecamp for the last 2 nights. We will make a stop at Lago Castrozza, a green lake surrounded by sharp mountains.
Our hotel in Ortisei is a luxurious spa hotel, with swimming pool and everything we need to stay comfortable. Sunset will take place at Alpe di Siusi, easily one of the most stunning mountain locations in the world.

Day 7:

During sunrise we return to the plateau of Alpi di Siusi, which is the largest high altitiude Alpine meadow in Europe and considered by many as one of the best sunrise locations in the Alps. The morning often provides a thin layer of fog on the meadows, which is of course incredible for photography. After sunrise we continue towards the village of Santa Magdalena, where the famous St. Johann church is waiting for us with the impressive Odle mountains rising 3000 meters behind it.

Day 8:

After breakfast it is time to drive everyone to the Munich Airport (MUC).

Mongolia - August 11 – 21, 2021

Mongolia Photography Tour - 11 – 21 August 2021—— SECOND TRIP ANNOUNCED!!

Mongolia 1.jpg

Eagle Hunters of Mongolia Photography Adventure

August 11-21, 2021

Mongolia is truly one of the world’s last hidden gems: pristine, undiscovered and brimming with a unique culture that has spanned over thousands of years. It is a place where you can experience far-reaching landscapes from dramatic mountains to canyons, deserts, and crystal clear rivers and lakes.

The first part of our Mongolian adventure will immerse you in the vast, rugged expanse of the Gobi Desert – one of the last few places on Earth where nomadic life remains a living tradition. We will travel in specially prepared Toyota Land Cruiser with local drivers where we will be welcomed into traditional Ger camps for the ultimate cultural experience. This will be our base camp as we explore the wild and wondrous landscapes all around.

During our multiple private sessions, we will have the opportunity to meet and photograph the locals as they herd Bactrian camels across the sands of Southern Mongolia. We will also have the chance to partake in a very special event – a private Golden Eagle Festival in West Mongolia. At this festival you can witness Kazakh eagle hunters celebrating their heritage by performing the ancient art of eagle falconry. After the festival, we will be whisked away to several remarkable mountain locations for a breathtakingly intimate encounter with the eagle hunters, as you photograph them framed against a backdrop with some of the most impressive scenes to be found in nature.

Be inspired by the untamed beauty of Mongolia… Join me on this thrilling photography workshop for a one of a kind, intense cultural experience.

Day 1 - Arrival

You will arrive in Ulaanbaatar (Airport Code ULN), where you will be met by me and my drivers, then transferred to your hotel. You will have the rest of the day at your leisure to explore the city; a melting pot of cultures where East meets West, before meeting our guides and the rest of the group at 7 pm in the hotel lobby. We will then go to a local restaurant for a Meet & Greet Welcome Dinner, during which you will be able to try some of the delicious regional fare and get to know your fellow travelers a little bit more. Over dinner, our guides will give us a brief overview of the itinerary and prepare everyone for the days ahead. We will stay overnight in Ulaanbaatar.

** Please note: International flights are not included in the price of this tour. When booking flights, please choose one that will land on this day before 5 pm. Options include via Beijing, Seoul or Moscow. However, it is recommended that you arrive one or two days in advance to ensure that you will be well-rested and that you will not miss your morning flight on Day 2.

Day 2

After breakfast, we will all board a domestic flight from Ulaanbaatar to Dalanzadgad. The flight time is 1.5 hours.

*The domestic flight(included in the price) times will only be released in March --so please don’t purchase your international airfare until we have been able to arrange these domestic flight times and have access to the local flight itinerary. In the case that no flights are available, we will travel by car from Ulaanbaatar towards Dalanzadgad at no additional cost.

Depending on our arrival time in Dalanzadgad, we will head towards the Khongor Sand Dunes – the most important sand mass of the Gobi desert – for a sunset shoot. Suddenly arising from the plains and reaching breathtaking heights, these dunes are undoubtedly among the most spectacular in the country. Beyond the dunes, the steppe extends as far as the eye can see, making for a mind-blowing scene.

We will spend the night in a tourist Ger camp. Amenities include electricity and a shower. The Ger camp is heated with 2 persons allocated to each Ger. Each person will have their own bed with linen, blanket and a pillow provided.

Day 3

The adventure truly begins! We will have a sunrise session at the Khongor Sand Dunes, where a camel herder will be waiting to provide us with an exciting and private shoot with camels. The sunrise is sacred to Mongolians, as they believe that the first rays of the sun revive the spirit. You will have the chance to experience this principle first-hand as you witness the rays streaking across the undulating curves of the Gobi Desert, painting the mountains behind them with a blushing glow.

In the evening, be prepared for a sunset shoot in the magnificent Gobi desert, followed by an unimaginable shoot beneath the fabric of the night sky, adorned with a veil of countless shimmering stars. You’ll retire for the night at the same tourist Ger.

Day 4

On this day, we’ll have an early sunrise session at the Khongor Sand Dunes and treated to a hearty breakfast before making our way towards the Bayanzag red sand cliffs, arriving by the afternoon. Otherwise known as the “flaming cliffs”, these smoldering ridges take on a life of their own at sunset, during which you will have the chance to photograph their fiery edges ablaze with the light of the sun from a number of panoramic locations. We will retire for the night in a small Ger camp.

Day 5

The adventure continues with a 1.5-hour flight from Dalanzadgad airport back to Ulaanbaatar. Upon arrival in Ulaanbaatar, we will be transferred to a comfortable hotel in the city center and have the chance to rest before meeting up for dinner at a local restaurant. We will spend the evening in Ulaanbaatar.

Day 6

The day begins early with a 3-hour commercial flight to Ulgii city from Ulaanbaatar. From there, our drivers will pick us up and take us towards our next destination – the welcoming home of a Kazakh family, where you will be presented with the opportunity of a lifetime to capture portraits of the locals dressed in traditional clothing.

In the afternoon, we will have an exhilarating sunset shoot with several eagle hunters poised regally with sweeping mountains all around, making for a series of captivating photos. After sunset, our drivers will return us to Olgii, where we will have dinner with the group before retiring for some much-needed rest for the night in a simple hotel with a shower, access to wifi and electricity.

Day 7

After breakfast with the group, return to the home of the Kazakh family from the day before. Be prepared for a day of breathtaking wonder, as you partake in an experience of traditional Kazakh heritage ---a private Golden Eagle Festival. Our private session will be different from the much busier public festival, during which it is almost impossible to take home any photographs of much value due to the sheer number of people in the background. During our private session, you will have full access to take as many stunning photos as you like while the Kazakhs demonstrate their majestic skills in eagle falconry on horseback with nothing but the landscape all around. Clad in traditional coats and scarlet hats, the eagle hunters will exhibit their mighty finesse in a whirlwind of fearlessness as Golden Eagles perch strongly upon their arms. You will even have the rare opportunity to get up close and personal with the Golden Eagles, as well as to allow one to perch upon your own arm.

Afterward, we will have a private portrait session with up to 20 eagle hunters across several diverse locations, spanning mountain ridges to grassy marshlands where reflections and horse hooves crashing into the water will make for immeasurably heart-stopping moments and magnificent photos.

In the evening, we will return to Olgii where you will retire to your hotel.

Day 8

After yesterday’s excitement, you’ll be glad to wake to a leisurely morning and a hearty breakfast, before heading towards the stunning wilderness at the foothills of the Mongolian Altai mountain range. This spectacular region is home to many different ethnic groups and five striking holy peaks – of which Tsambagarav, standing at 4208 meters tall, will be your magnificent backdrop for the day. On this day, we will participate in a private photo session with five eagle hunters, who will demonstrate their prowess in an incredible 360° location surrounded by jagged, rocky ridges to one side and snow-capped mountains to the other. In the evening, you will return to Olgii and retire for the night in our hotel.

Day 9

Following on from another epic day, we’ll rest in the morning before heading out for lunch in the town of Olgii. From there, our drivers will transport us to a crystal blue lake, to photograph three eagle hunters set against a panoramic rocky viewpoint. The magic takes hold when the sun begins to set, bathing the eagle hunters in the last rays of warm sunlight. It’s a wonderful occasion to practice shooting with a person for scale, demonstrating the power of the eagle hunters against the immense beauty of the landscape.

Return to Olgii in the evening and retire for the night at our hotel.

Day 10

After a hearty breakfast in the morning, depart from Olgii airport on a flight back to Ulaanbaatar. This 3-hour flight is included in the price of the tour. On return to Ulaanbaatar, check into our hotel, after which we will have a few hours to explore the city center at our leisure. In the evening, we will get together for a final farewell dinner at a restaurant in Ulaanbaatar before retiring for the night.

Day 11

We will be transferred by our drivers to the Ulaanbaatar airport (code ULN). The private transfer is included in the price of the tour.

The main photo tour in Mongolia is easy to moderate in terms of physical activity. Most of the locations, even in the mountains, will be easily accessible from where our drivers will park. The first and second locations in West Mongolia are about a 50-100 meter walk from the car, whereas the third location involves a 300-meter walk with a 20-30 meter ascent on a 20-30% slope to reach a small panoramic hill. At the Gobi Desert, you will need to be prepared to walk in sand dunes, which can be moderately physical in nature. We recommend that you bring hiking poles for this part of the tour if needed.  (30-40 minute walk to reach the beautiful inner dunes.)

Weather: (Averages During Our Trip)

Coldest: +1°C to -2°C

Normal: 6°C to +8°C

Warmest: +13°C to +16°C

The Gobi desert is the warmest area in Mongolia. But it’s autumn time and it gets cold in the night time. So please bring warm clothes.
