Katmai National Park boasts the world’s highest concentration of bears, an estimated 2,200, giving you the unmatched opportunity to observe these magnificent creatures up close. In addition to bears, wildlife abounds with over forty species of mammals that inhabit the park, including seals, sea otters, moose and fox. Super rare sightings include wolves and wolverine For the bird lovers we can hope to photograph, puffins, ducks, geese, kittiwakes, shorebirds, and bald eagles. I don’t even remember a trip to Alaska without seeing a lot of eagles.
We will set out each morning by boat, exploring the myriad of beaches within the bay where bears congregate in search of clams, feeding in the fields of sedge grass, or catch salmon as they travel upstream. As conditions allow, we will join bears and other animals on land, giving us extremely rare wildlife viewing, and of course, unparalleled photo opportunities. We may also land at the famed Hallo Bay depending on local conditions.
Lunch times and locations vary depending on weather, tides, activities and guests interests (either a picnic lunch or return to the lodge). Dinner is generally around 7:00 p.m. and after dinner, the guests are on their own to enjoy the local scenery and the comforts of the lodge.
Everyone will be allowed 75 pounds per person, the normal is 50 lbs but as a group we have been extended this courtesy.
