If you have the Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS Lens, you will need to attach either a plate to the existing foot or buy a replacement foot for the lens. The replacement foot above is made by Really Right Stuff. The Really Right Stuff LCF-102 Lens Foot Assembly for Sony FE 200-600mm replaces the original foot of the lens and is fully compatible with the 1.5" RRS Dovetail Standard. It sells for about $130.00.
I recently purchased the replacement foot above. It goes on quickly and easily, it feels like heavy-duty construction yet it is light-weight. I like RRS products and have faith in them that is why I went with this one over the one featured below.
Another foot worth noting is the Kirk Replacement Foot for Sony FE 200-600mm lens. It is back ordered on B&H and it is about $90.00 so it is cheaper, but in my opinion the RRS foot feels like a better design. But both are top sellers and have great reviews.
*The original foot does not necessarily "need to be replaced", However, if you want to attach a heavy lens like a medium telephoto or telephoto lens to a tripod, you will need to add a plate to the foot so that it can be attached to the tripod head thus making the overall combined weight lighter.
*A heavy lens should never be mounted via the camera to a tripod head --you need to mount it using the foot of the lens.
