I went to visit my favorite fox family this morning with friends Jim Fennessy and Andrae Acerra. The sun had just come up when we arrived, so we had the option of either going on the beach and having the sun behind us or to photograph them backlit.
Since the sky was way more beautiful over the ocean I opted to shoot them backlit (only in the very early morning just as the sun was rising) and take advantage of some of the orange color tones in the sky. I tried to keep the brightest sections of sky out of the shots by not pointing my lens directly at the sun but rather just to the side of it. However, these guys were moving around so much it was difficult.
The fox kits spent a lot of time near the dune fence. They kept jumping over it, again and again. One of the kits got stuck in-between the fence and I contemplated helping it but only for a minute as it soon broke free on its own.
One of the kits played with mom most of the time, ignoring its siblings. I got a few shots of them together. and you can hardly tell who is who. She was so patient with it and never seemed to mind its endless attacks.
While we were there she brought in another squirrel and quickly went out for more food for her young. I don’t know how she does it. She is quite impressive.
